[Updated] Mitali East has closed for good on 6th Street

That's it for the always-reliable Indian restaurant at 334 E. Sixth St. between First Avenue and Second Avenue that opened in 1973.

The sign posted to the front door sends would-be patrons to Haveli, their sister restaurant around the corner on Second Avenue...

And this makes three Indian restaurants now in one at Haveli. Banjara moved here in late 2013.

You can read more about Mitali East closing in our previous posts here and here.

Updated 1:24 p.m.

Workers are now dismantling the space...

Pretty soon all of 6th street will have been merged into a single Indian restaurant.

I used to like the weekend buffet but an experience with one idiot waiter has kept me out of there for the past year or so...its no longer curry row, its now noodle row.

In the late 70s, when there were perhaps a dozen Indian restaurants on E. 6 St., we believed they all shared a common kitchen. The $4.95 curry dinners were remarkably identical from place to place.

So we were planning to go to Mitali for dinner tonight, but when we got there it was closed. So we went over to Kabin for a drink to discuss where to go next, but it was closed too. Then we said, lets go over to Mercadito. Oops. Too late, It's closed too. Well, at least we can go get some pastries and espresso at DeRobertis. But of course it was closed. Ok, so maybe we should just go home and order some Benny's Burritos? Nope. Closed. How about Simone? Yaffa Cafe? Bereket? Gray's Papaya? Funkiberry? Dollar Pizza? Uh uh. All Closed. So I said well, then lets go out to Brooklyn, they have pretty good food over there. But then I heard that it's closed.

Mitali East has been CROMANATED by notorious predatory landlords Steve & Harriet Croman, the poster persons for insaitable landlord greed that has taken over this city and ruined it. The Cromans are responsible for ruining the lives and livelihoods of countless people. May all the harm and destruction they have caused over the years to people and to this city fall back on them a thousandfold. Your Karma awaits you Steve and Harriet Croman!
