Organic food store taking over the former Kim's Video and Music space on 1st Avenue

We don't have many details just yet, but we can confirm what's coming soon to 124 First Ave. between East Seventh Street and St. Mark's Place — an all organic food store called East Village Organic.

They hope to be open in two months. (Meanwhile, the proprietors started a Twitter account.)

Kim's closed here for good last Aug. 25. The original listing for the space noted the address would be perfect for a bank, 7-Eleven or Starbucks.

Ahhh, landlords - they have all the imagination of a stoat, to say nothing of the feral cunning of a starving wolverine when they smell money.

We haven't had an organic food store since Prana, which was located directly across the street, closed. I think they're going to do ok, I can't think of another organic food store around the neighborhood.

Commodities comes to mind...

Competition is a good thing and now Commodities will have more than just Whole Foods to contend with. Having more choices is always a good thing. Landlord bashing is generally idiotic, especially in this case. I look forward to giving them some biz.

The landlord in this case is the butcher. Remember the butcher that was in that location prior to Kim's. It is disgusting that they would even think of renting to a chain store. They owned the butcher shop for years, which the community supported. I am glad that a chain store in not coming into that location.

If the community had supported the butcher he would not have closed.
