Stepping away from the neighborhood for a moment... signage is up on the corner of University Place and 12th Street for another NYC location of Sweetgreen, the healthy quick-serve restaurant that offers various custom salads and grain bowls, etc.
This corner was home for 60 years to the University Diner, which closed in 2012 over a reported hefty rent increase. Gunz Fine European Food — an upscale chocolate shop and market — arrived in 2013 and left a few years later.

I refuse to eat at places that won't take hard earned cash. I find the "trend" uneasy.
Any word on whether the quirky News Cafe in a likely privately owned six or eight story mid century residential rental a few doors down is likely to survive the incoming condo across the street discussed over at Bberg today here: https://www.bloomberg.com//news/articles/2017-06-13/at-manhattan-s-bowlmor-lane-condos-the-big-spenders-are-locals
Like many such establishments seemingly impervious to the market trends that have removed so many businesses from our and other NY nabes, this one appears to have escaped predatory lease hikes due to less motivated or benevolent ownership by an entity, likely family, who has held the property long term and may no longer be locally situated. Would also be interesting to assess the other few remaining non-chain businesses on University between 10th and 14th if you or knowledgeable readers ever have time...
@10:57 just pointing out that the policy is to deter theft, from employees mainly but also so an employee is not a target for it when they make the deposit
While there may be practical reasons for not taking cash, it is also a clear message that poor people and old people (who are more likely to use cash)are not wanted....
We Can't trust the people with they're own cash. That's just crazy and dangerous
