A quick look at Manhattan Pawffice, opening next week at 20 St. Mark's Place

Photos by Derek Berg

Back on Oct. 3, we reported that a doggy daycare was the new tenant for the long-empty retail space at 20 St. Mark's Place between Second Avenue and Third Avenue.

More specifically, this will be Manhattan Pawffice, a sibling to Brooklyn Pawffice out in Williamsburg.

Per their NYC website: "Welcome to our dog daycare and boarding facility located in the heart of the East Village. With spacious play areas and a vast backyard, your furry friend will have plenty of room to run, play and rest." For anyone curious, there is outdoor space behind the building.

The building does have outdoor space in the back. (The previous tenant, the Grassroots Tavern, never used it.)

The Manhattan Pawffice website lists a grand opening on Monday.
The Grassroots Tavern, the last tenant in this lower level of the landmarked building, closed after 42 years in service following New Year's Eve 2017.

Your Funzi's Pizzeria signage on St. Mark's Place

Some classic-looking signage is up now at 36 St. Mark's Place, where Funzi's Pizzeria is set to open soonish here between Second Avenue and Third Avenue. (They are currently hiring.)

We're told that it will be an old-school slice joint with a few Italian dishes as well.

And we're betting that Funzi's will break the curse of one-and-done quick-serve concepts at this address. (Reminder: Oh K-Dog & Egg Toast, Joe's Steam Rice Roll, Cheers Cut, Friterie Belgian Fries, Fasta and the $1.50 branch of 2 Bros. Pizza — all since 2015.)

Glizzy's bringing hot dogs to this block of St. Mark's Place

Signage for Glizzy's is up now at 34 St. Mark's Place between Second Avenue and Third Avenue.

This will be the second outpost for the brand that got its start last year in Williamsburg, and boasting "Brooklyn's Best Hot Dogs." (Current signage is missing the 's on Brooklyn for now.)

Johnny Huynh, the founder and co-owner of Glizzy's grew up in Bushwick and operates Lucy's Vietnamese restaurants in Brooklyn.

Some background via Greenpointers:
Glizzy's menu kicks off with the "N.Y. Classic" that includes onions in red sauce, sauerkraut, and spicy brown mustard. Next, there's a dog called "Houston, We Have A Problem" with smoked brisket chili, chopped and fried onions, and a cheddar cheese sauce.

The "OG Lucy's" is a nod to Huynh's Vietnamese restaurant and has cucumber, cilantro, basil, mayo, pickled carrots, hoisin, and sriracha. Next up is the "Mr. Lee" with kimchi, scallions, furikake, fried garlic, Korean BBQ sauce, and sesame oil.

"The Ocky" is halal and includes chopped onions, tomatoes, harissa, and yogurt sauce, while the "Phil Me Up" contains potato salad, scallions, furikake, and curry ranch dressing.

No word on an opening date for Glizzy's, which is nestled among other quick-serve options on the block. The storefront was previously the ice cream shop Lucky Star.

Near-miss in Tompkins Square Park as branch falls

On a beautiful Sunday afternoon in Tompkins Square Park, a large branch from a majestic American Elm came crashing down to the ground inside the Avenue A-St. Mark's Place entrance...
Witnesses said it came very close to hitting a man in a wheelchair (thanks to Janie Heath for the clip)...

This is the second branch to fall in the Park in recent weeks... on May 16, a young parkgoer escaped injuries after being hit by a limb that fell in the dog run — also on a calm, sunny day.

Funzi's Pizzeria next for 36 St. Mark's Place

Signage is up at 36 St. Mark's Place for the next quick-serve tenant — Funzi's Pizzeria.
We need to find out who the operators are...  as well as the opening date. The signage simply states, "Funzi Hath Arrived."

This was a quick turnover at the address between Second Avenue and Third Avenue. Oh K-Dog & Egg Toast just closed here at the end of February.

Funzi's marks the seventh food concept at No. 36 — Oh K-Dog & Egg Toast, Joe's Steam Rice Roll, Cheers Cut, Friterie Belgian Fries, Fasta and the $1.50 branch of 2 Bros. Pizza — since 2015

What's up with Two Hands?

Photos by Steven

The Two Hands outpost on Avenue A between Ninth Street and 10th Street has been closed for the past week-plus.

A sign on the front window of the Korean corn dog specialists states "a technical issue" is behind the closure.. and go to the location on Mott Street...
The windows were later papered up... and it appears the interior has mostly been packed up...
Google lists the business as permanently closed. We reached out to learn more about the status of the Avenue A shop, which opened here in April 2021 as part of the L.A.-based chain's U.S. expansion.

Tough times for Korean-style street food here. Oh K-Dog & Egg Toast closed its doors earlier this month at 36 St. Mark's Place between Second Avenue and Third Avenue.

Oh my: Oh K-Dog & Egg Toast the latest concept to close at 36 St. Mark's Place

After less than a year on the block, Oh K-Dog & Egg Toast has closed its doors at 36 St. Mark's Place between Second Avenue and Third Avenue.

Workers cleared out the storefront late last week, and an employee confirmed the closure to EVG correspondent Steven.

The quick-serve establishment sold Korean-style snacks such as stuffed hot dogs and egg toast ... the space included a K-pop shop, selling music, books, calendars, stickers, etc., for a variety of South Korean bands.

The Texas-based chain still has locations in the NYC metropolitan area, including on Ludlow Street.

This address has seen several concepts come and go without much success... the last business was Joe's Steam Rice Roll ... others included Cheers Cut, the Taiwanese mini-chain of fried foods ... Friterie Belgian Fries ... Fasta ("Pasta Your Way") ... and the $1.50 branch of 2 Bros. Pizza

Openings: Oh K-Dog & Egg Toast on St. Mark's Place

Oh K-Dog & Egg Toast has debuted at 36 St. Mark's Place between Second Avenue and Third Avenue. (H/T Steven.)

The quick-serve establishment sells Korean-style snacks such as stuffed hot dogs and, you guessed it, egg toast.

In addition, as we noted in February, this outpost includes a K-pop shop, selling music, books, calendars, stickers, etc., for a variety of South Korean bands.

The Texas-based chain also has locations on Ludlow Street and Seventh Avenue South, with several more planned for the city.

This address has hosted its share of quick-serve businesses through the years, most recently Joe's Steam Rice Roll.

K-Dogs and K-pop on St. Mark's Place

Oh K-Dog is opening a branch at 36 St. Mark's Place between Second Avenue and Third Avenue, as we noted last summer

This past week, new signage (h/t Steven!) arrived next to the shop that will sell Korean-style snacks such as stuffed hot dogs and egg toast ... for K-pop Albums and Goods.

People have asked about it... a side business, perhaps? We'll see! There isn't any mention of it on the Oh K-Dog site or social media.

Oh K-Dog also has outposts on Ludlow Street and Seventh Avenue South, with several more planned for the city.

As for this storefront on St. Mark's Place... not much has had success here in recent years. Joe's Steam Rice Roll was the most recent tenant, quietly closing in March 2021Other concepts included Cheers Cut, the Taiwanese mini-chain of fried foods ... Friterie Belgian Fries ... Fasta ("Pasta Your Way") ... and the $1.50 branch of 2 Bros. Pizza.
