A proposal for a loading zone outside the incoming Trader Joe's on 14th Street at Avenue A

On Wednesday night, Community Board 3's Transportation, Public Safety and Environment Committee will hear a proposal for a seven-day-a-week commercial loading zone for the incoming Trader Joe's at 432-438 E. 14th St. just west of Avenue A.

The proposed hours for the loading zone: 4 a.m. to 10 p.m. There's no information at the moment about how large this spot might be for commercial trucks making deliveries to the coming-soonish store.

Back in May, Trader's Joe's officially added 432 E. 14th St. to its list of store openings, ending nearly two years of speculation that the chain was opening its second 14th Street outpost here in the retail complex of the residential building called EVE.

Don't expect this TJ's to open anytime soon, though... here's a look inside the other day...

Meanwhile, L-train work continues along this corridor between Avenue B and First Avenue, though MTA officials say they are ahead of schedule by three months.

The Committee meeting is at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in the CB3 office, 59 E. Fourth St. between Second Avenue and Cooper Square.

Previously on EV Grieve:
Trader Joe's finally confirms that a Trader Joe's is opening on 14th Street at Avenue A

All about EVE, the Peter Stuyvesant Post Office-replacing rentals on 14th Street

Claim: A Trader Joe's won't be coming to new development at 14th and A after all

Trader Joe's: No current plans for grocery at 432-438 E. 14th St.

Looks like there's a Trader Joe's coming to 432-438 E. 14th St. after all

The Trader Joe's near Union Sq is in an even busier part of 14th St, and I have noticed trucks making deliveries but it never seemed to create a log jam of traffic. I expect this to be approved.

Kills me to see another Trader Joe's arriving. I'd rather the 4th St Food Coop expand into a bigger place or any other grocery store chain that isn't some yuppified reality. I digress, this is the EV we have now and need to make it better in the ways we can. Yups are people too...that have been raised on consumerism and educated in brands, is all.

@9:14am: Perhaps you don't live near enough to the Union Square Trader Joe's to see the traffic clog they do create. And the noise from having delivery trucks! Fortunately, they are opposite Con Ed's building, so the trucks are not keeping a building full of people awake at night.

But at the new location, it seems like *someone* might have used their head to anticipate a large retail space that would need deliveries (whether it was TJ's, or a drugstore, or whatever). This appears to be a complete failure to recognize reality, and now they want to gum up traffic on 14th St, AND have truck delivery noise that will disturb residents, including in Stuy Town. Busway be damned, eh?

It will be interesting to see how the SBS M-14A bus will be able to turn to Ave A with a large loading zone at that location. Doable? Maybe.

I feel sorry for the people who live above the store/loading zone. That is a real horror. The noise will be unbearable.

it's not just the loading and unloading
the traffic is 24 hours a day and this is a major crosstown block.
the existing noise from sanitation and commercial garbage collections can wake the dead.
unfortunately the east vllage/lower east side has turned into a 24/7 noise machine.
with all the hi-rise new development i can see an all day and night constant rush hour on 14th street, rive to river.

In NYC, "destination" stores like Trader Joe's and Whole Foods completely change the streetscape and impact transportation, garbage and general infrastructure.

For example, on the West Side, 72nd Street and Broadway which used to be a relatively quiet intersection, was transformed by Trader Joe's arrival in 2010. Tons of people and vehicles. Shoppers load groceries into Ubers and block the bus stop. Actually the long-time bus stop which served 2 routes had to be split (inconveniencing riders of course)because due to traffic, there was no longer room for 2 buses. Trader Joe's big delivery trucks also impact on another bus stop.

We shop at Trader Joe's about once a month for items not available elsewhere. It is soul-crushing IMO. Also always blown away by how much packaged food most people seem to buy. And so many people who cite the low prices seem OK with spending money on Ubers....hmmm
NYC now the suburb

At least it isn't a WholeMart™.

I'd love to see a bigger 4th Street Food Co-op; I've been a member there several years, and I think we could make that work—but with commercial rents what they are, ain't gonna happen. (We're in an MHA space right now; that's Cooper Square Mutual Housing Association, so our options for moving anywhere are very limited.)
