So long Dean & Deluca

From over at Broadway and Prince earlier this afternoon ... EVG reader Robert Miner shared this photo showing the auction sign up at the flagship location (circa 1988) of Dean & Deluca.

As we first noted earlier this month, the financially strapped high-end grocer and cafe had put up a "temporarily closed" sign here that no one really believed. The company was up to its green tea truffles in debt.

And this afternoon, the once-grand brand auctioned off all that remained inside the shop.

As of now, only two U.S. locations — both in Hawaii — are believed to be in existence. The Dean & Deluca website has also expired.

The writing was on the wall a long time ago. It was lame the company said they were making "renovations" when we all knew they were closing their doors. Its much better to just tell the truth than to bullshit us. RIP D and D.

I wish I could find it in me to be sad about this; I know David Bowie shopped here, but as George Harrison said: All Things Must Pass.

That place was wall to wall people all the time - how could it fail?

Terrible.

kinda sad for such a downtown institution but I have to admit I stopped going years ago after Soho became a shopping mall with hordes of tourists clogging the sidewalks

I will miss their coffee and baked goods. I used to stop in there and it always seemed busy. I guess that is not enough in these days with the kind of high rents landlords charge in Manhattan.

True...they weren't cheap either. I think mismanagement killed it.
