Plywood arrives for Tompkins Square Bagels build-out on 2nd Avenue

As we've been reporting, Tompkins Square Bagels is opening a second East Village location — this one at 184 Second Ave. between East 11th Street and East 12th Street.

Workers erected the plywood outside the storefront for the renovations yesterday. Owner Christopher Pugliese told us previously that he hopes to be up and running here in December.

Read our interview with Pugliese here.

It'll be only $25 per square foot once we renovate over the sidewalk ... said...

So are they extending the storefront further onto the sidewalk like so many other spaces have done in the EV? If so, it's a great gift of public space for the landlord .. more square feet for the store, less space for pedestrians. Or is this temporary just for the construction period?

The plywood is only temporary during the renovation. The build-out is in the back of the building

Actually Grieve, for a while we were indeed planning to extend, not only out onto the sidewalk, but across 2nd Avenue where we would join with the movie theatre. The plan was to sell popcorn crusted bagels and milk dud flavored cream cheese. Day old bagels painted bright colors and re-purposed as jawbreakers were also discussed. City nixed the permits though so we decided to just stick to the space we have.
