Catch a wave on Astor Place

We noted the #rednose installation on Astor Place yesterday for the upcoming Red Nose Day.

You may have noticed two other installations on Astor Place... these arrived back on Friday, and are part of the NYC Wave Trail. These were designed and installed for the UN's World Oceans Day on June 8.

This one one the north plaza is titled "Rise" by Suki Waterhouse...

... and the one outside Cooper Union is "The Birth of Venus" by Margaret Zhang...

There are 54 sculptures total in the city.

As much as I like the street art coming to Astor, it has the feeling of just being plopped down where it won't get in the way. Not good. And that includes the 2 monoliths just behind Coop U. Outdoor art is a good idea for Astor if they can't finish planting the trees. But they have to do a better job of placement so the public can better appreciate the forms - ie the Keith Haring sculpture.

I don't get it, there is no obvious corporate sponsor attached to these things, boring.....

I wish somebody would plop down a Big Dick sculpture.

I hope some of these are on Park Avenue, Central Park West, and especially I hope they put one directly in front of Bloomberg's houses (the two adjacent ones he owns).

Astor Plaza should be converted into a real park with a black cast-iron fence, trees, bushes, flowes, and a water fountain in the middle.

Rename it Astor Park.

I agree. A park would be lovely. Grass! Trees. Wooden benches!!!!
