Now open on A: 99-Cent Fresh Pizza & Hot Dog and nearly open: Ralph’s Famous Italian Ices

In 99-cent pizza news, the 99-Cent Fresh Pizza & Hot Dog shop is now open at 131 Avenue A between St. Mark's Place and Ninth Street. Let us know if you try it. (For real.)

Meanwhile, that Ralph’s Famous Italian Ices on the next block at Ninth Street is looking very close to opening... with new signage up on the front windows (H/T Steven!) ...

and a Doughnado warning...

really like who old school the signage is. Not the usual artisanal retro lettering stuff.

Excited for Ralph’s!

Coney Island, welcome to Avenue A!

Ralph's is welcome, and the sign is wonderful, but soft-serve ice cream is horrible. It promises big but delivers only disappointment. Might as well eat frozen cool-whip. It is the tofurkey of deserts. There is no reason that it should exist.

Ralph’s is from Staten Island.

Love the nostalgic, old schools vibe.

Who wants shaved ice in the fall and winter?

It may not be apparent from their menu but Ralph’s offers both soft serve and hard ice cream, and their hard ice cream is delicious. They can make most items on the menu using either soft or hard ice cream. I usually get their sundaes and milkshakes made with their hard ice cream, but many kids like soft serve so the option is there. Here are Ralph’s hard ice cream flavors:

Black Cherry Vanilla
Black Raspberry
Butter Pecan
Cake Batter
Chocolate
Coffee
Cookies ‘N Cream
Cookie Craze
Cookie Dough
Blue/Cotton Candy
Mint Chocolate Chip
Mississippi Mud
Pistachio
Strawberry
Vanilla
Vanilla Chip
Vanilla Graham

The same people who eat soup in the summer.

@anon 3:15 - Mexicans eat soup in the summer, even in the summer in Mexico. There is no higher recommendation.

@Giovanni - the term "hard ice cream,"
in a better world, would be redundant.

I don't know what doughnados are but I plan on collecting all of them.

I somewhat agree with Dr. Grecko. Big Gay's Salty Pimp is incrediblly overrated and overpriced. On the other hand, Nicoletta's sold a vanilla soft serve gelato concoction that was fantastic.

Since I've been on a tight budget ever since this stupid Covid-19 pandemic hit, I've gone rediscovered the fine selections of Baskin Robbins, esp. the prepacked quarts for $10.99. Mabbois and Pink Bubblegum, ftw!
