RIP Kenny Kendra

Kenny Kendra (aka Kendra Zimmerman), a familiar figure in this neighborhood before moving to California several years ago, died on Saturday. Friends said that she suffered a stroke. She was 47.

Through the years in the East Village she had worked at Trash and Vaudeville, Enz's and Religious Sex, among other places. She moved to Long Beach, Calif., and was the owner of a food truck called The Head Hunter.

"She was punk rock with a heart of gold," her friend Cheyenne said in an email. "The stray cats always found her and she would always take them in and take good care of them. They knew a good soul when they found her."

Her NYC friends are gathering tomorrow evening at 6 at Otto's Shrunken Head on East 14th Street to celebrate "the Life and Times of Kenny Kendra."

Still very sad about her passing. She was a major part of the underground nightlife and a classic East Village personality. One more important link to the past gone, and worse for it being an old friend. :(

I met Kenny in Tompkins Square Park in 2015 and years before that I think I saw her at Religious Sex. I'm glad I got to meet her, may she find peace on the other side and God rest her soul.

I used to see her around all the time, must have seen her a hundred times over the years. Nice lady. It seems she had high blood pressure and coulld not afford her medications beciase her health insurance ran out. If anyone still thinks that having health insurance doesn't save lives, think again. This is what she posted on Facebook last month:

Kenny Kendra was feeling alive.
October 3 · Long Beach, CA ·
So on Sunday night I had some sort of seizure. Chest pain like I was going to have a heart attack. Couldn't breathe, ear ringing. Sight went from grey to black. I guess I passed out gasping for air. If it wasn't for Chris Minor looking out for me, I could be dead. So, I thank you!

Thank you everyone! I have super high blood pressure and I can't get my medication for 2 more weeks because my insurance ran out. Sucks!

I'm very sorry to hear this. I didn't know her very well but I remember her seeing her at lots of gigs in the early 90's and at Coney Island High. A regular fixture on the scene.

R.I.P. Kendra

My first big childhood crush, I knew Kendra since second grade, here in our home town of Exeter, NH. We had lost touch after high school, but reconnected on Facebook a few years ago. We had hoped to meet up in person again soon.... now I just hope to see her on the other side....

Rip Kendra, was just thinking of her mom Ann and sister Cara, who I had the pleasure of working with at Best Western in Seabrook and then found this very sad news today after just loosing a good friend a few weeks ago. They were so much fun to work with and the times we had!!! Rip Kendra!!
