[Updated] Work underway on the new residential conversion on East 7th Street

[October 2011]

It was all the way back in October 2011 when we first heard about Villa Capri, a new residential building coming to 222 E. Seventh St. just west of Avenue C.

The sign eventually disappeared, as did any chatter about the project. However, in December 2013, the city signed off on the application for the new building. Plans show that the current single-family residence will nearly double in size… with an additional two floors on the way. The plans show eight dwelling units in total.

And the point of all this is to say work has started at No. 222, which looks rather hallowed out now…

No word just yet if the development is still going by Villa Capri, which sounds like a resort in St. Lucia or something.

As we pointed out previously, the address was the onetime studio of famed sculpturist Louise Nevelson.

Updated 10:10 a.m.

Oh! Somehow we missed the rendering on the plywood... here's what's to come... (thanks Dave on 7th!)

this is sad, I always thought this was a special building (late 20's perhaps) what is coming is anything but.

More housing for millionaires. Nothing for normal people except dust and heartache

Such a shame. Yet another nice little brick building with character and eye appeal, lost to yet another ugly, imagination-free box. I sure hope that circle in Hell reserved for today's real estate developers and hiders behind foreign LLCs is big enough, cos there seems to be an ever-swelling tide of the bastards.

I live three buildings down from this on C and 7. I pass it every day. Since I've lived in this area from 2010, my rent has increased to an impossible rate at each lease renewal period. I am questioning once this building is erected and complete, what will my rent be like then? I foresee this particular area slowly working its way to gentrification and homogeny, full of more bros, hipsters and trust funds kids. No more artists or families. With things like this, how will the latter afford it? It feels like no place in this borough, let alone this city, is safe from maintaining the sacred history and appearance of certain neighborhoods.

I'm OK with some new buildings, and I know we can't save everything, but ... "Villa Capri"?! Can't we get some "Ginsberg Towers" or something?

A nice job was done across the street the new building fits in fine and the condo's sold out quickly. The Developer would do well to consider the facade then again this artist rendering is dated and Capri Villa may no longer be the proposal..
