If you live or work in area you should have noticed by now all the new rat burrows in the neighborhood. Rats have made a home in the tree wells of the newly planted trees that are apart of the million trees program. It is a real issue affecting the health of everyone who lives here. Building supers and tenants have to work at not creating an environment for the rats to flourish in. No one wants the city spraying and placing poison outside of our doorsteps.
This was a useful program and it was almost a capacity crowd.
The main issue most people seem to be ignorant of is DON'T FEED THE RATS! People are feeding the rats by throwing scraps out for the pigeons—even if they insist, "I'm not feeding the rats; I'm feeding the pigeons/squirrels."
Of course, it's a very emotional issue; I had one woman retort, "Well, you've just never been hungry!" And our sanitation workers are too overtaxed to go putting bait in every back yard; this is actually a good thing, because we don't want to try and fix the problem by throwing poison at it.
People, try and keep the trash receptacles closed; rats are attracted to a food source, so if they don't find food, they'll go away. Problem solved.
