Last July, the owners of three businesses had to vacate their storefronts due to a structural issue in the building at 300 E. Fifth St. just east of Second Avenue.
S & P Liquor & Wine eventually moved to Second Avenue after one false start reopening in the storefront … while Jamie the check-cashing guy, whose family owned the business for 68 years, had to shut down at the end of 2014 as repairs dragged on. He had been operating for five months from a secure van outside his shop. (Not sure what happened with the third place — Today's Cut hair salon. Updated: They moved to East Seventh Street just west of Avenue A.)
Now that the old businesses have moved on, the landlord has refurbished and rebranded the space, which is now going by The Shops of East Fifth Street, per the for lease sign that recently arrived…
As you can see, the space is divisible … though no food. We didn't spot the listing just yet online.

Structural issues. These landlords are crafty. I actually know of one who intentionally backhoed a building's foundation to get the tenants out, then proceeded to tear down the building -- all with the city's approval.
This scrumbag isn't much better.
Maybe Ralph Lauren and Marc Jacobs will move in soon after all this is a high-end shopping destination just like west Bleeker street. Sigh.

Today's Cut hair salon moved to 7th St and Ave A. The shop opened at its new location about 2 months ago.

Yes the landlord really dragged his feet hoping to outlast Jamie the check cashing guy. Amazing how quickly thereafter he spruced up the stores and "re-branded" them. "The Shops on East Fifth Street" Oh boy.

I walked right by there and didn't make the connection...
This is a terrible block with no foot traffic. It isn't even a through street as it ends at 1st Ave.
The Risotto place across the street, which I have heard is good, would be much busier if it were any place else. Same goes for the charming 50's vintage furniture shop (I think it is called White Trash.) The bakery in the space before the Risotto place only lasted a short while.
All that combined with the annoying way the police park their cars, and the huge and desolate police parking lot, and the equally desolate empty side of Rite Aid, makes me never want to walk down there. The landlord won't get very much for "The Shoppes of East 5th" unless he tricks some clueless tenant unfamiliar with our neighborhood.
They can try and call it anything they want but the block will never be anything but all cops cars and failed business because of no traffic. I miss Jamie and I miss S&P being there. At least we have cute animas and khrishnas here now though Gimme Gimme should not have had to close.
