The Bowery Mission is short on donations

Per Lisha Arino at DNAinfo today:

The Bowery Mission’s food pantry is in “urgent need” of donations, as its food supply has dwindled and demand for meals has increased, officials said.

Entire shelves at the 227 Bowery soup kitchen are completely bare and essential items like pasta, canned goods and condiments are in short supply, according to Assistant Director Matt Krivich.

People can donate pasta, rice, condiments, pasta sauce, canned vegetables, beans and other food items at the Bowery Mission, 227 Bowery, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. They also need clothing. Find more info here.

East Villagers who support the Mission's mission will surely come to their aid now that they know this!

The irony is the billionaires now own the Bowery...oh wait, that's the plan, kill the poor.

I plan on donating - because it's the right thing to do and also because I want to see the Bowery Mission stay where it is and remind those gentrifying fucks what the neighborhood once was.

I imagine they will get a lot more help from regular middle class people than from the fuckwit finance millionaires who are their new neighbors.

I imagine we can just donate cash too?

Well I know where I will be going this weekend and what I will be dragging along with me. Thanks for the heads-up.

I'm donating food to the mission, I cannot not think of a better way to get food to those down on their luck, as the old saying goes. We must all be thankful we are not in these people's shoes.

I was wondering what to do with my old winter coat when I buy a new one this year. Now I know. Thanks, EV Grieve!

Yes, they do accept cash, food and clothes.

Its better to call and find out what the current immediate need is and bring the item(s). The problem they are having is that there are no options for the guys who eat there. The city shelter system is a disaster and Bloomberg closed the drop in centers ( the Open Door on 9th/41st is an example). These places had food and showers and case workers.Bloomberg wanted to force people into the shelters - which are worse than Rikers. ( I speak from personal.experience) Even if you go to the shelters.there is no permanent housing available. No section 8 vouchers or public housing. You end up with lots of guys who eat out of garbage cans and ride the trains all night. And luxury condos sit empty.

East Villager Today- Most East Villagers in 2014 don't support the Bowery Mission and its mission. There is more concern over a dead tree being cut down in TSP than the crisis at the mission. Nobody will protest to the point of arrest to help the most destitute. These aren't poor people- they have literally nothing except the clothes on their back and whatever they carry around. I know its hard for most to grasp but that is the reality. Look at the first post- 200 people showed up for a rally over a construction project. Its all part of the new NYC. The reality is the Bowery Mission doesn't have women or kids or dogs or cats or things that people care about. Nobody in the new NYC cares about homeless men. I'm sure the hope is that the mission moves and the building(which is a national historic landmark) becomes something that serves the 'community'. I can only imagine what the holidays and winter will be like if they are having problems now. This is usually the slower time of year for them. This is when they are supposed to be prepping for the busy season- Nov-March. I'm off to the store to buy items to donate. Please consider doing the same. Or donate clothes you no longer want.

Do you think "Curbed" will share this link? This should be Santa Con's charity, if they are having it anyway at least money will be given to a local cause.

As a former Bowery bum (1967-1971) I'm all in favor of keeping the Bowery Mission going. I only went there once before I realized I could get three meals a day and a flophouse bed from the Men's Shelter, 8 east 3rd street. Now all of that support system has left the Bowery and all that is left is the Mission (is the Catholic Worker still serving lunch on 1st street?) I miss the idea of a homeland for the winos, the tramps, the dispossessed of the city. I well remember a cop taking me aside when I was panhandling midtown and telling me "Go down to the Bowery where you belong." All gone.

Dear EV Grieve:

As a community service can you post something about these the Bowery Mission as we get nearer to the holidays?
Since everyone likes to say how much they care about the community maybe this will spur some to actually , you know, do something productive and positive for the destitute- most of whom are born and raised here in NYC.
There is so much concern and money given to overseas causes. This is local and helps people in need. Thank you.
