NYPD rescues dog locked in car on Avenue B

Last night around 10:15, with the heat index hovering around 100 degrees, passersby noticed a pit bull locked inside a vehicle on Avenue B near East Eighth Street.

Someone called the police, who arrived and freed the dog from the car… the police took the dog away in a cruiser. No word on the whereabouts of the pit bull's owner.

Thanks to EVG reader Chris Ryan for the photo and report

Man, some people are seriously stupid. Hope that poor puppy winds up in a much better home with much smarter owners.

Animal patrol is back on the job :-) it's good to save a life, now if it could just also be a human life that is saved we'd all be good.

The 9th, good for dog poop and saving dogs. How do we get the gold shields to care about the bipeds or do we go to animal control for that?

Get your priorities in order boys! Not that our dogs aren't important but if you don't know what your job is the people don't know who you represent.

What about the homeless junkies and their dogs? Where are PETA and the ASPCA? These animals are being abused. Why isn't anything being done? Dogs used as props by junkie panhandlers need help

When I walk past the sleeping crusties in the morning I really am jealous of how close they are to their animals. They sleep on top of each other, they are a pack. Tiny apt and fulltime job leaves me a dogless dog lover.

I have to say I am so sick of people criticizing NYPD at every turn. They did a great thing saving the dog from the dumb human and if you know any cops personally in the 9th you know they are constantly bravely putting themselves at risk, in fear, and are sacrificing themselves and putting your safety first. So praise them for their work, don't criticize. What were you doing last night? Watching real housewives while you sit their and judge from your computer? All I have to say is GO NINTH!!!!!!!!! We love you and keep up your great work. May Saint Michael bless you and protect you always.

Criticizing the police (especially with broad generalizations) at seemingly every turn is just reflexive for some people (and no, I'm not suggesting the police are beyond reproach). A job well done by the officers of the 9th.

The public needs to know who it is that they're dealing with get them out of their positions and off their posts. How many individuals end up in jail for crimes they didn't commit?

The fact that a nineteen year old took his own life after being locked up for three years for having done Nothing!!!

You want to save a dog great, I love dogs but I've learned why it is they call cops pigs because that's what they are * forget the smokescreen media and BS, TELL the TRUTH!

Are there any updates on the dog?
