Video: Cyclist snatches woman's phone on Avenue A; Citi Biker follows in pursuit

An EVG reader shared this Dashcam video with us from late yesterday afternoon around 5:30 … when a woman walking west on Seventh Street at Avenue A has her iPhone snatched by a cyclist (it's at the 24-second mark)… following in hot pursuit is a well-dressed man on a Citi Bike…

Sadly, we don't know the outcome… the woman is last seen stopping on A at East Fifth Street after running down the Avenue…

H/T Brian Cohen for passing along his friend's video… posted with permission…

A valuable lesson in city living.

Love the Candle in the Wind Soundtrack.

Hope she had her "Find my iPhone" activated, and they catch this shitbag.

And to think the city built him his own special getaway bike lane...

Citibikers totally rock!

Good on you, sir, for trying, whether the outcome was successful or not. Thank you, whoever you are.

I think he turned left on 5th street...because the bikes disappeared....I hope he was caught.

Way to go cyclist, bringing back the old days!

(kidding!)

So that's why they don't stop at stop signs or red lights.

The CitiBiker wasn't giving chase. He was just in a hurry to find a CitiBike docking station, before his 30 minute time limit expired.

The Citiot was likely his accomplice.

Hand off the stolen booty to a corporate caucasian on a citibike, and he disappears into a sea of button-down oxford shirted citiots.

The guy who stole the phone turned left on fifth street and headed straight for the projects on avenue D where the phone was promptly re-stolen along with his bike, shoes and hipster backpack. #EVPeckingOrder

One Lesson Learned: Don't walk and text. For many reasons. And this is just one of them...

Thanks DeBlasio....4 more years! 4 more years!

I'm not even a larcenous person, but I get the urge to snatch phones all the time when I am riding my bike--just to make a point. You should not walk across a busy avenue while staring at your fucking phone!

I've always wanted to do that to oblivious texters crossing streets. Have her run up several blocks, stop, wait for her, return the phone, and caution her with a PSA about crossing streets while texting.

The Citibiker, by the way, does not look as if he is in pursuit.

I wonder if the well-dressed man gave chase if it was a man's iPhone that was snatched.

This is always one of my worst nightmare. I cannot even imagine what I would do. I often carry my iPhone and listen to music. But now after seeing that, perhaps I should think differently. That young girl was surprisingly quick on her legs and seemed to do her best going after the creep who did this. I certainly hope they catch and charge him. What kind of piece of shit does that?

Wondering if Sir Citibike's act of gallantry got him laid ...

He was like 6ft tall, handsome, dark hair, oh, wait, you meant the perp, Officer? ... said...

So, Anon@10:36 AM, your question is: "I wonder if the well-dressed man was a bi-cyclist", huh? Such thoughts should be relegated to the deepest recesses of your mind.

I hope someone beat the shit out of him.

Ripe pickings around here for anyone who like to snatch smartphones from oblivious walkers. You could gather them by the bushel if you wanted to. So many people around here are very, how should I put this, trusting.

Ha ha, good luck catching anybody on one of those Citibank bikies. They have three gears, beach cruiser tires and weigh about sixty pounds.

She's an idiot. Pay attention when mall walking with your freakin' cellphone. I, too, am often tempted to grab someone's cell and smash it when they walk into me, or just stop in the middle of the sidewalk, or stroll in front of an emergency vehicle (with sirens blaring), or or or or.... Maybe should can claim the cost of her phone as tuition.

Was this an "experiment?"

People need to put their damn phones away unless they ring. Take a minute to see what's happening around you, this is a great city with a lot of interesting things to see and hear. Maybe the thief did her a favor by giving her some reality in her day.

No. He did not do her a favor. Land of the take what ever you fucking for free. Voting for Trump. He will get us back on track.

The New York Post picked up and mangled the story today reporting that it happened on Avenue C at Seventh Street and that the guy was riding a red bike. That looks like a black 10 speed to me. Also I had no idea there was a Miss Lillys on Avenue C. I'm just waiting for Donald Trump to blame the whole thing on Mexican immigrants.

That woman could have been run over. And for what? A Galaxy Note? Cell phones are replaceable and easily wiped and banned from cellular networks. It's not worth it. Also, those of you that are encouraging theft because people have their noses stuck to their phones, I hope someone steals your shit one day.

The young woman, who is not a moron by the way, also could have been assaulted or badly hurt. As far as the cyclist is concerned, karma is a bitch. He will get what is coming to him.

Now I am happy that I posted the video. All these awareness and coversation on our daily life in the great NYC.
