City shuts down the Tompkins Square Park Art Bar after 1 day

[Yesterday!]

Well, after one day, the Tompkins Square Park Art Bar (aka the remnants of the now-closed Black Rose) is no more... EVG regular Daniel reports that a city sanitation crew stopped by the corner of Seventh Street and Avenue A and took away the bar and most everyone else that Jerry and Co. had assembled from the cleared-out space at 117 Avenue A...

Just some of Jerry's paintings and his shoes — and the Black Rose's Jimmy Page Monolithic Riff — remain...

Nooo! It didn't even make it to Happy Hour!

Of course they did. There's no place for individuality in our corporate-sponsored city any more.

Will there be a crowd funding campaign?

Repression got normalized to an extent that even such little vestiges of individual creativity are being wiped out...

I think it's kind of funny that people are incensed at the shutdown of the detritus of a bar that many loathed because of its status as a signifier of EV gentrification. I realize that sentence is unwieldy, but I stand by my point.

This would be great by crusty row lot of new customers

So sad..unique expression of artful space

I think you could've written:

"Funny how the shutdown of a makeshift street bar made up of Black Rose stuff pissed off so many people when many considered BR a symbol of gentrification."

I can only speak for myself, but this saddens me mostly because Jerry was doing something creative and entrepreneurial, and he looked happy. Anyone who has been in the EV more than 5 minutes knows he deserves some happiness. Jerry also embodies the inventive and free spirit that used to represent the EV. Not long ago, there were many others who would be quick to snatch up and repurpose items left on the street. Nowadays, with attention spans set to zero, people see only trash, more disposable detritus to be ignored and cast aside.

So cluttering up a sidewalk with all that shit (excuse me, "art") that no one looked at in the first place is okay? Please. Offer a Jerry a spot in your apartment then, art lovers. How about your little terrace then? No? Inconvenient for you? Interferes with your private space? Oh well.

Some of you love to feel so edgy when you advocate that people take over public spaces with their garbage. I hated walking past that trash heap of pretentious crap---so good riddance.

Jerry would have been smarter to sell all that right away and pocket the dough. Plenty of idiots who would have bought something right off the street---that's so EV!

It has nothing to do with the shutting down of Black Rose, and everything to do with the fact that someone took the time and effort to set up a visually interesting vignette with the bar's detritus, a little bit of non - corporate, non - threatening, not - bland suburbanism that used to be a normal occurrance in an artier EV/NYC, only to have it almost immediately disassembled because it didn't fit in to the new, standard lifestyle that is being dictated to us from on high. That is what I, for one, was commenting on.

@Anon 10:27 and Gojira - exactly! It's sad that people can't see that.

I've seen that guy go on tirades.
Frankly, I'm glad they shut him down he shouldn't be talking to anybody he's a little scary.
